Winter Light

There is a moment, about halfway through, when the light comes flat and grey through the tall windows and you understand that the film is not going to comfort you. A pastor loses his faith over the course of a single afternoon, and Bergman films it the way you’d film weather — patiently, without argument.

We recommend it for a Sunday when the sky is already low. Pair it with silence, or with the Arvo Pärt below.

“God’s silence. The silence of God.” — and the film simply sits inside that sentence for an hour and lets it be true.
